Charleston, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets scored three times in the first inning, but the first place Charleston RiverDogs (Tampa Bay Rays) had plenty of offense to respond with. Charleston trailed 4-1 in the third inning, but went on to score six runs the rest of the way and hang on in the series opener 7-5.

Cole Wilcox, listed as the 8th overall prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays system, worked around a shaky first inning to toss five frames, allowing four earned runs. He'd strikeout nine.

GreenJackets starting pitcher Joey Estes went just three innings, allowing three runs. It's just the second time this year Estes hasn't gone four innings in a start.

The first inning scoring came thanks to RBIs from Landon Stephens, Willie Carter, and Victor De Hoyos to put Augusta in front 3-0.

In the third inning, with Augusta leading 3-1, Brandon Parker's sacrifice fly extended the lead to 4-1. Charleston answered with two runs in the home half of the frame to make 4-3. In the fourth, Curtis Mead drove in two with a single. The RiverDogs led 5-4.

Cade Bunnell hit his fifth home run of the year, in the fifth inning, to tie the score at five.

Charleston broke the tie and took the lead for good on a passed ball, scoring Johan Lopez in the 6th. Then, a wild pitch moments later scored Heriberto Hernandez and Charleston led 7-5.

In the ninth inning, Victor De Hoyos and Bryson Horne singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. But Cam Shepherd flew out to end the game.

NOTES:

  • Cade Bunnell and Vaughn Grissom paced the top of the Augusta lineup. Both went 2-for-4 scoring two runs. Bunnell added an RBI with his 5th inning home run.
  • Victor De Hoyos went 2-for-4. He now has four multi-hit games this year and has played in just 11 games.
  • James Acuna pitched 2.1 scoreless innings yesterday. He hasn't allowed a run in his last three outings and 5.2 innings out of the bullpen.
