Hackman’s Strong Start Steers GreenJackets to Victory

Pitching Leads the Charge as Offense Wakes Up in Middle Innings

HICKORY, NC: With a few hours’ extra rest after yesterday’s 11 AM start, a refreshed GreenJackets club took the field at LP Frans Stadium this evening and fired back at the Crawdads, grabbing a 4-2 win on a rainy Thursday night.

The story of the evening revolved around Owen Hackman, as Augusta’s Opening Day starter dazzled in his second outing of the season. Hackman went 5.1 impressive innings, the longest by a GreenJackets’ starter so far this year, allowing just one unearned run and punching out seven. Hackman’s splitter was a particularly dangerous weapon against Hickory’s barrage of lefties, and kept them fumbling all evening.

While Hackman kept the Crawdads at bay, the GreenJacket offense began to awaken from its slumber, posting a series of strong at-bats early against starter Caden Scarborough. It was in the 4th where Augusta fully threatened, loading the bases on a walk and two singles with one out. Scarborough would punch out Douglas Glod, but Luis Sanchez came up big with a two-run single to give the ‘Jackets their first lead of the week.

The Jackets doubled the lead the very next inning, attacking reliever William Privette for a pair of runs that would prove insurmountable. RBI singles from Nick Montgomery and Isaiah Drake, both of whom got their first RBI of the year, made the lead 4-0.

The Crawdads would close the gap in the middle innings, snaking an unearned run from Hackman in his final full inning. Marcos Torres collected the RBI, scoring Chandler Pollard from 3rd after a passed ball placed him there. It would be the only blemish on Hackman’s ledger, as he picked up his first win of the season, and the first by a GreenJackets starter.

Hickory’s 2nd and final tally was manufactured in the 6th, thanks to a leadoff triple from Maxton Martin off of Trent Buchanan. Martin scored on a grounder to short, but a strike ‘em out-throw ‘em out double play wrapped up the inning cleanly.

Buchanan settled in and sailed through the 7th and the first two outs of the 8th before ceding the ball to Jackson Dannelley. The righty retired all four batters he faced, completing his 3rd consecutive scoreless outing and earning his first professional save.

With their first win of the week under their belt, the GreenJackets will look to even the series tomorrow evening on another rain-soaked day. Ethan Bagwell will make his 2025 debut and second professional start, while Hickory counters with southpaw Mason Molina, the first lefty starter for either team this week.
