Home Runs Power GreenJackets to Victory

Augusta Takes Five of Six Against Delmarva

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The homerun ball played a major factor for the Augusta GreenJackets (12-9) on Sunday afternoon in the series finale against the Delmarva Shorebirds (6-15) as they took the final game from the Baltimore Orioles affiliate 7-5 to win their third consecutive game.

For the third-straight game, the Shorebirds got on the board first as Isaac Bellonylaunched a home run off Augusta starting pitcher Royber Salinas to begin the second inning making it 1-0 Delmarva.

The lead would once again be short-lived as Brandol Mezquita answered that home run with one of his own as he knocked a breaking ball from Delmarva starter Shane Davis out of the ballpark for his first big fly of the season to even the game at one apiece.

The pitchers really settled in as Salinas and Davis traded zeroes all the way until the sixth inning. That's when the long ball would come back into play for the GreenJackets as Rusber Estrada kept the power swing from last night and gave Augusta the lead on a solo home run to make it 2-1. The damage would continue on in the frame with Adam Zebrowski shooting a liner into right field to score Kadon Morton and Cal Conley to up the lead to 4-1 after six innings.

Augusta would grab some key insurance runs in the eighth inning with Kadon Morton connecting for his second homer of the season with a solo shot over the left-field wall for the third GreenJackets home run of the day. Two more runs would score in the inning with Cal Conley scoring on an error and Brandol Mezquita driving in Geraldo Quintero on an RBI single in the infield to advance the lead to 7-1.

All of those runs would be needed as the Shorebirds put together a final rally in the ninth inning that led to four runs and with the bases loaded in a 7-5 game, Peyton Williams struck out Darell Hernaiz to end the game and conclude the series with Augusta winning five of the six games against Delmarva.

Royber Salinas delivered another fantastic start on the mound as he dealt five innings of one-run baseball with nine strikeouts and just one walk. JJ Niekro relieved him in the sixth inning and pitched three consecutive scoreless innings en route to his second win of the season. Peyton Williams came in for the final out and picked up his first save of 2022 to seal a 7-5 victory. Shane Davis took the loss for the Shorebirds.

Brandol Mezquita finished with two RBIs on the day as well did Adam Zebrowski with his two-run hit in the sixth inning. The three home runs the GreenJackets hit by Mezquita, Rusber Estrada, and Kadon Morton matched the most homers Augusta has hit in a single game when they also hit three against Colombia on April 9.

The GreenJackets now return to the road as they travel to Zebulon, North Carolina to face the Carolina Mudcats (Milwaukee Brewers) starting on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
