*Wilmington, DE (August 10, 2022) – *Five different Cyclones had multi-hit games as Brooklyn defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks by the score of 8-1. Joe Suozzi’s fourth inning grand-slam blew the game open and Dominic Hamel improved to 4-0 since joining the Cyclones with another solid outing on the mound.
The Cyclones drew first blood on Wednesday evening, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Matt Rudick singled to start the game and advanced to second when Stanley Consuegra reached on a fielding error that put a pair of runners aboard with one out. Jose Peroza took advantage of the scoring chance with line-drive double to left field to plate Rudick and the ‘Clones had an early 1-0 edge.
The lead doubled in the third inning when Jaylen Palmer worked a bases loaded walk that pushed home another run and made it 2-0 after three. But in the top of the fourth Brooklyn took control of the game for good.
Rudick doubled to get things started and Matt O’Neill followed with a walk to put a pair of runners aboard and put an end to the night for Wilmington starter Rodney Theophile. Stanley Consuegra welcomed Gilberto Chu to the game with a single to load the bases with nobody out. Jose Peroza worked a bases loaded walk to push another run across before Jose Mena reached on a single to make it 4-0, still with nobody out. After William Lugo struck out, Joe Suozzi hit an opposite-field grand slam to clear the bags and make it 8-0 Brooklyn in the top of the fourth.
Dominic Hamel (4-0) made the start for Brooklyn and continued to impress tossing 5.0 near-flawless frames, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. The only run he allowed came on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. Southpaw Nathan Lavender added 2.0 shutout frames out of the bullpen and Cam Opp went the rest of the way to close out Brooklyn’s 8-1 win.
The Cyclones and Blue Rocks will square off in Game Three of the series on Thursday evening at 6:35 PM. LHP Keyshawn Askew will make the start for Brooklyn.
