Lakewood, NJ (August 28, 2022) – The Cyclones completed a six-game series sweep of the Jersey Shore Blue Claws on Sunday afternoon with an 18-1 victory. For the Cyclones it was their 13th consecutive win over Jersey Shore dating to June 23rd. William Lugo, Shervyen Newton and Matt O’Neill – the seven, eight and nine hitters in the Brooklyn lineup – combined for nine hits, seven runs scored and 11 RBI to pace the Brooklyn bats.
Keyshawn Askew made the start for Brooklyn but lasted just 2/3 of an inning as he struggled with control and walked three batters to load the bases. The southpaw threw 29 pitches with just 14 strikes, and left the game with the bases loaded and two out. Nathan Lavender (2-1) got the final out of the first inning and tossed 3.1 near-flawless frames allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Jeffrey Colon went the rest of the way, tossing 5.0 innings of one run ball, scattering three hits and striking out nine.
Brooklyn opened the scoring in the top of the second when Shervyen Newton had a bases clearing double to give Brooklyn a 3-0 lead. Newton hit .391 (9-23) with eight runs scored, three home runs and 10 RBI during the six-game series with the BlueClaws.
The lead would grow in the top of the third when Stanely Consuegra stroked a two-run home run into left field – his fifth homer with Brooklyn – to make it 5-0. Matt O’Neill and Matt Rudick added back-to-back RBI singles later in the frame the push the lead to 7-0 after three.
In the fourth, William Lugo connected on a 3-1 offering and launched it over the left field wall to make it 10-0 Brooklyn and the rout was on.
In the fifth, three straight walks to start the inning loaded the bases and Gregory Guerrero was hit by a pitch to force home a run. Stanley Consuegra and William Lugo both added RBI ground outs to make it 13-0. Matt O’Neill and Matt Rudick added back-to-back RBI singles, again, to push the lead to 16-0 and Alex Ramirez capped the inning with an RBI double that made it 17-0 in the fifth. When the inning was over, the Cyclones had sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs courtesy of three base hits, five walks and a hit-by pitch.
In the bottom of the sixth, Baron Radcliff hit his 14th home run of the season for Jersey Shore to account for their only run of the game. And in the top of the 9th Brooklyn made it 18-1 on a Shervyen Newton RBI double to round out the scoring.
The Cyclones will return to Coney Island to take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks starting on Tuesday evening to open their final homestand of the season. The Cyclones find themselves just ½ a game out of first place with 12 games left in the regular season.
