Cameron leads Bisons to 9-8 series opening win over Rochester

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Daz Cameron led the Buffalo Bisons with five RBIs on their way to a 9-8 victory over the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday night at Sahlen Field.

Trey Yesavage made a Major League injury rehab assignment for the Bisons but worked just two-thirds of an inning after reaching his pitch limit against Rochester. The right-hander had not pitched in a game since August 4 for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Houston Astros.

The Bisons went to work against Connelly Early in the bottom of the second inning and turned a two-run deficit into a two-run lead. Each of the first three Bisons’ batters reached base, including a leadoff base hit by Jay Harry. He scored on a Shawn Ross RBI base hit to right field.

Lenyn Sosa, RJ Schreck, and Ross were all on base when Cameron hit a two-run base hit to right-center field that cleared the bases. Cameron was credited with a pair of RBIs, while Ross scored on a throwing error. Cameron advanced to second base on the throw and was left in scoring position. Both run-producing base hits came against reliever Jack Cebert for a Bisons 4-2 lead.

Buffalo added another run in the bottom of the fifth after Rochester committed two errors on one play. Harry lined a base hit to left field, while an errant throw by Trey Lipscomb allowed the batter to advance to second base. Cebert’s throw to home plate was wide and allowed Yohendrick Piñango to score from third base and Harry to advance to third. It all resulted in a 5-2 Buffalo lead.

Rochester was able to score a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning against Jose Rodriguez that brought the visitors within a run, 5-4. Riley Adams and Leandro Pineda both scored a Sam Peterson two-run base hit. The two runs in the sixth were the first scored on Buffalo’s bullpen after Yondrei Rojas and Josh Winckowski combined for four scoreless innings.

Cameron’s second run-scoring base hit in the last of the sixth inning cleared the bases and extended the Bisons lead to 8-4 over Rochester. Nick Goodwin recorded a one-out base hit against Cebert. That was followed by a Ross walk. Rhylan Thomas singled against Eddy Jean, while Cameron drove all three base runners in with a double to left-center field.

Piñango added an RBI base hit against Jean that scored Cameron from third base following a wild pitch. That ballooned the Bisons’ lead to five runs, 9-4.

Rochester would score four times between the final three innings to get within a run. However, young right-hander Gage Stanifer struck out back-to-back batters to end the game and preserve Buffalo’s 9-8 victory in the opening game of the series.

The two teams are scheduled to meet at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday night at Sahlen Field. Right-hander Josh Stephan will start for Buffalo.
