Cancer Survivor, Former MLB Pitcher Dave Dravecky Headlines Faith & Family Day

May 18, 2011

The Binghamton Mets are proud to partner with Davis College, Grace Baptist Church and First Baptist of Johnson City to present Faith & Family Day 2011 with the Binghamton Mets at 1:05 PM Saturday, May 21st at NYSEG Stadium. The afternoon will be highlighted by a post-game testimony from former Major League pitcher and cancer survivor Dave Dravecky.

Dravecky pitched eight seasons in the National League with the San Diego Padres (1982-87) and the San Francisco Giants (1987-89). His career was tragically cut short by two bouts with cancer. The first of which cropped up in 1988 when a tumor was found in Dave's left arm - his pitching arm. He underwent successful surgery to remove part of his deltoid muscle and freeze his humerus bone to eliminate the cancer cells. In 1989, he miraculously rose through the minors and reappeared in the Major Leagues for the Giants in August. However, in his second start back with San Francisco, his career would end. Dravecky snapped his humerous bone in half throwing a pitch to Tim Raines in the sixth inning of the Giants game with Montreal August 15. Cancer had returned and caused the horrendous injury. Two years later Dravecky had his left arm and shoulder amputated due to the lingering effects of the cancer treatment.

He now makes his living touring the country and inspiring thousands every year with his story of faith, family and the battle to save his life. Dravecky will offer his life testimony directly following the B-Mets game for all in attendance.

In addition to Dravecky, local faith-based ministries will be in attendance to greet fans and display the services they provide the local community.
