Late Flurry of Runs Swamps ‘Birds in Loss to ‘Peckers

SALISBURY, MD – The Delmarva Shorebirds saw a close game late get blown wide open in a 15-5 loss to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. After tying the series up last night, the Shorebirds (19-35) now trail the Woodpeckers (25-29) 2-1 in the series.

SALISBURY, MD – The Delmarva Shorebirds saw a close game late get blown wide open in a 15-5 loss to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

After tying the series up last night, the Shorebirds (19-35) now trail the Woodpeckers (25-29) 2-1 in the series.

Logan Cerny smashed a three-run homer, his ninth of the season, in the first inning to start the scoring for Fayetteville.

In the bottom of the first, Luis Valdez walked for Delmarva, stole second and then third, coaxing a throwing error in the process, allowing him to score to make it 3-1.

Joey Loperfido doubled home two in the fifth for the Woodpeckers to extend the lead to 5-1 for the Woodpeckers.

Brayan Hernández smacked a solo homer, his second of the year, to lead off the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Fayetteville plated a run on an RBI fielder’s choice in the sixth and two in the seventh on a Logan Cerny RBI single and a run-scoring throwing error.

Delmarva rallied in the bottom of the seventh, plating three runs on two bases loaded walks and a Frederick Bencosme RBI single, cutting the deficit to 8-5.

Fayetteville ran away with the game late however, plating seven in the eighth to seal the 15-5 win.

Bryant Salgado (3-4) picked up the win for Fayetteville, allowing four runs on two hits and six walks, striking out three.

Ryan Long (1-2) suffered the loss for Delmarva, allowing three runs over three innings on four hits, striking out four.

The Shorebirds continue their series with the Woodpeckers on Friday, June 10. Moisés Chace (0-2, 5.82) is slated to go for the Shorebirds while Fayetteville counters with Zack Matthews (1-3, 9.49). First pitch from Perdue Stadium is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
