‘Birds Go Wire-To-Wire In Series Opening Win Over Wood Ducks

Reed Trimble goes 3-for-5 with two RBI, Juan Nunez extends scoreless streak to 11 innings

SALISBURY MD. – The Delmarva Shorebirds kicked off their final series of the 2022 season in style with a 5-2 win over the Down East Wood Ducks on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

In the first matchup this season between the Shorebirds (46-80, 25-36) and the Wood Ducks (64-63, 31-30), the Shorebirds jumped on the board immediately.

In the bottom of the first for Delmarva, Carter Young got it started with a triple. Jackson Holliday then doubled him home. Reed Trimble managed to leg out an infield single with a resulting throwing error allowing Holliday to score. After a strikeout, Isaac Bellony singled Trimble up to second. After another punchout, Noelberth Romero capped the rally with another base hit to score Trimble and make it 3-0.

The game didn’t see another run until the last of the sixth. Holliday walked with two outs and then swiped second. Trimble then doubled him in to increase the Delmarva advantage to 4-0.

Cameron Cauley got Down East on the board in the seventh as he tripled to start the frame and then scored on a wild pitch.

The Shorebirds pushed their lead back out to four in the eighth. Creed Willems and Adam Crampton both singled to start the frame, with aggressive baserunning on Crampton’s knock, putting the runners at second and third. After a flyout and a strikeout, Trimble legged out another infield single, scoring Willems with Crampton getting thrown out at the plate.

In the top of the ninth, Down East rallied to plate a run on a Marcus Smith double and ultimately brought the tying run to the plate, but Yaqui Rivera slammed the door for the ‘Birds to close out the 5-2 win.

Jared Beck (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Shorebirds. Beck went three innings and allowed a run on three hits, striking out four.

Mitch Bratt (5-5) suffered the loss for Down East. Bratt conceded three runs in 4.1 innings on eight hits and four walks, striking out five.

Rivera converted his second save of the season for the Shorebirds, giving up a run over two innings on two hits and two walks, striking out two.

Shorebirds starter Juan Nunez worked four scoreless frames, running his consecutive innings streak up to 11. He allowed just a hit and a walk, striking out four and retiring the final eight batters he faced.
