Creed Willems Slugs Shorebirds to Wednesday Win

*SALISBURY, MD: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (13-8) quickly got back in the win column on Wednesday night as they downed the Carolina Mudcats (12-9) by a score of 6-2.

Delmarva put themselves ahead by a comfortable margin early by striking for four runs in the second inning, starting with an Adam Crampton RBI single to score Douglas Hodo, giving the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Carter Young then drove one home with a deep sacrifice fly to center as Crampton came home easily from third to up the advantage to 2-0. Creed Willems capped off the inning with a two-run single that brought home Michael Mantecon and Stiven Acevedo to put Delmarva ahead 4-0.

The Shorebirds would add another run to the tally in the fifth as Crampton singled home Douglas Hodo again after a leadoff triple to push Delmarva's lead to 5-0.

Carolina would attempt to rally in the sixth as they scored twice on a Jesus Parra RBI single and a wild pitch, closing the gap to 5-2.

But Creed Willems would get one of those runs back in the seventh inning on a solo blast over the wall in right-center for his sixth homer of the year, extending the Shorebirds edge back to four at 6-2.

The bullpen for Delmarva finished the job as Luis Sanchez tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth inning with a season-best five strikeouts. Yaqui Rivera took over for the ninth and worked around a pair of walks by striking out two, concluding a 6-2 victory for the Shorebirds.

Moises Chace (2-0) earned the victory with three solid innings of relief with Carolina starter Yujanyer Herrera (1-1) taking the defeat.

Creed Willems led the charge offensively with his sixth homer of the year in the seventh while driving a total of three on three hits, reaching base all four times and finishing just a triple shy of the cycle. Adam Crampton drove in a pair with two hits, while Douglas Hodo scored on both of Crampton's knocks. Hodo's three-bagger in the third inning was the first triple of his career.

The Shorebirds will go for a second straight win over the Mudcats on Thursday night as Wyatt Cheney toes the slab versus Patricio Aquino for Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
