Delmarva Pulls Away Late to Complete Another Comeback Win

Shorebirds Even Series with Wood Ducks

KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (16-13) came from behind for the second straight night to top the Down East Wood Ducks (17-12) by a score of 7-2 on Friday night.

The Shorebirds found themselves behind early in the bottom of the first as Abi Ortiz put the Wood Ducks in front with a solo home run to make it 1-0. They'd add one more with an RBI single by Gleider Figuereo to push the Down East lead to 2-0.

Delmarva would start to work their way back in the third as Samuel Basallo cut the deficit in half on a run-scoring single, Angel Tejada came home on the play to make it a 2-1 game.

In the fifth, Carter Young tied the game on a long fly ball to center that was misplayed by Anthony Gutierrez, allowing Samuel Basallo to score all the way from first base, squaring the game at two.

An inning later, Brayan Hernandez led off with a double, and moments later, Douglas Hodo swapped spots with him with a two-bagger of his own, giving the Shorebirds their first lead at 3-2.

Friday was another excellent display of Delmarva pitching, beginning with their starter Bradley Brehmer who dealt a career-high five innings, settling in after the two first-inning runs by dealing shutout baseball the rest of the way.

He was relieved by Luis Sanchez who dealt a scoreless sixth and seventh with four strikeouts to keep it a 3-2 game through seven innings.

It remained 3-2 into the ninth inning, but Delmarva's offense delivered the dagger by scoring four times. Two runs came home on a two-run double by Samuel Basallo, Brayan Hernandez then scored two more on a fly ball to left that was missed by JoJo Blackmon, allowing both Basallo and Anderson De Los Santos to touch home, opening a 7-2 lead for the Shorebirds.

After tossing a scoreless eighth, Reese Sharp was tasked to get the final three outs and he did just that by striking out the side to cap off a 7-2 victory over the Wood Ducks to even the series.

Bradley Brehmer (2-0) picked up the win for Delmarva as he is the first Shorebirds' starting pitcher to earn a winning decision this year. Reese Sharp (3) earned his third six-out save with Damian Mendoza (1-1) taking the loss for Down East.

The Shorebirds offense collected ten hits in the five-run win, led by Samuel Basallo who produced his fourth 3-RBI game of the season and his second of the series. Douglas Hodo doubled twice in the game and Elio Prado collected his sixth multi-hit game of the year.

Delmarva will now look to win their third in a row on Saturday night and take command of the series with Juan Nuñez set to take the mound for the Shorebirds with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
