Down East Edges Delmarva in Pitcher's Duel

Shorebirds Lose 1-0 in Series Opener

KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (1-9) fell to the Down East Wood Ducks (5-5) in a pitcher's duel in game one of their six-game series as the Wood Ducks outlasted the Shorebirds by a score of 1-0.

After a scoreless first inning, Down East struck for the first run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Specht to score Danyer Cueva, making it 1-0 Wood Ducks.

Starting pitcher, Nestor German, was lights out for the Shorebirds after the unearned run scored on him in the second as he retired the next nine batters he faced, not allowing any hits in his outing with 6 strikeouts.

Braxton Bragg relieved him in the fifth and continued the dominance of his starter by not allowing a run in his four innings on the mound, striking out six to keep it a 1-0 game entering the ninth.

Delmarva put the pressure on Down East by putting runners at second and third with one out, but an infield pop-up and a strikeout would get the Wood Ducks out of trouble, earning them a 1-0 victory in the series-opening game.

Relief pitcher, Justin Sanchez (1-1), earned the win for the Wood Ducks with Nestor German (0-1) taking the loss. Brayan Magdelano (1) retired the final six batters to earn the save.

The Shorebirds will have a quick turnaround as game two of the series is Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Jacob Cravey taking the mound for Delmarva against left-hander Brayan Mendoza for Down East.
