Five-Run Eighth Inning Helps Woodpeckers Pull Away

SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (3-18) were defeated by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers in Tuesday's series opener at Perdue Stadium by a score of 10-2.

Fayetteville wasted no time getting on the board as the second batter of the game, Oliver Carrillo, doubled to right-center, scoring Kenni Gomez. Carrillo scored on an RBI single by Juan Santander, giving the Woodpeckers a 2-0 lead after an inning.

In the fourth, Fayetteville added to their lead with an RBI triple by Cesar Hernandez, followed by a two-run homer by Nehomar Ochoa Jr., putting the Shorebirds behind 5-0.

The Shorebirds would chip away, starting in the fourth as Alfredo Velasquez scored Cole Urman with an RBI single to left, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

Delmarva would get a run closer in the sixth as Maxwell Costes touched home on a wild pitch, making it a 5-2 game.

However, the Woodpeckers broke the game open in the seventh, scoring five runs on a two-run double by Santander, an RBI single by Waner Luciano, and a two-run shot by Cesar Hernandez, elevating the Fayetteville lead to 10-2.

The Shorebirds would be held scoreless in the final three innings, securing a 10-2 win for Fayetteville in the series opener.

Colby Langford (3-1) was awarded the win in relief for the Woodpeckers with starter Jacob Cravey (0-1) taking the loss for Delmarva.

The series continues on Wednesday as the Shorebirds look to even the series with Ty Weatherly on the mound versus Alain Peña for the Woodpeckers. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
