Charleston Defeats Delmarva in Series Opener
*SALISBURY, MD: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (10-8) fell in Tuesday's series opener to the Charleston RiverDogs (12-7) by a score of 9-5.
Cooper Kinney put the RiverDogs on the board almost immediately as the second batter of the game hit a home run over the right-center wall to make it 1-0 Charleston.
The Shorebirds would use a home run of their own to tie the game as Rolphy Cruz sent one over the fence in right field to even the game at one.
The RiverDogs retook the lead in the third on a bases-loaded walk with nobody out, but Delmarva would escape the inning with no further damage thanks to a 4-6-3 double-play started up by Adam Crampton who caught a line drive right before it hit the ground.
Charleston, however, would keep their bats hot by scoring a run in the fourth with an RBI double by Odalys Peguero to score Ryan Spikes, making it 3-1. The deficit grew to 8-1 following a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Xavier Isaac to put Delmarva in a seven-run hole.
But Delmarva would look to rally in the sixth as they scored twice on pair of wild pitches to make it an 8-3 game.
After an error gave Charleston a run back in the seventh, Delmarva put two more runs on the board with a two-run shot by Samuel Basallo to pull the Shorebirds within four at 9-5. Basallo's 12th homer of the season.
Delmarva would not be able to pull any closer as the RiverDogs shut down the Shorebirds for the rest of the night as they took the series opener 9-5 to win their sixth in a row.
Both starters factored into the decision as Johny Cuevas (4-6) earned the win for Charleston with Alfred Vega (3-3) taking the loss for Delmarva. Jake Christian (2) was awarded the save.
The Shorebirds will look to even the series against the RiverDogs on Wednesday night as Luis De Leon makes his Shorebirds debut against Alex Ayala Jr. for Charleston with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
