RiverDogs Take Series Finale Over Shorebirds

Delmarva Haunted by 8-Run Sixth Inning

SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (11-12) were defeated by the Charleston RiverDogs (16-8) in Sunday's series finale by a score of 8-4.

The game began as a pitcher's duel as Deivy Cruz and Jake Christianson matched each other pitch-for-pitch through the first three innings as the game entered the fourth scoreless.

Delmarva would then produce the game's first run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Anderson De Los Santos that scored Trendon Craig to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.

Deivy Cruz continued to dominate on the mound as he completed five shutout innings, facing just one batter over the minimum to keep it a 1-0 game entering the sixth. Cruz extended his scoreless innings streak to 18 innings, not allowing a run for his fourth straight appearance.

But disaster would strike in the sixth inning as the RiverDogs scored eight runs to put Delmarva in an 8-1 hole.

The Shorebirds would look to work their way back as they got three of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame on a three-run homer by Anderson De Los Santos to give him four RBIs for the game, trimming the deficit to 8-4.

The offense for Delmarva would put a pair of base runners aboard in the seventh and ninth inning, but could not score on either occasion and the RiverDogs would go on to win the series finale 8-4, giving them five out of six games in the series.

Starting pitcher Jake Christianson (3-0) was the winning pitcher for Charleston with Alfred Vega (3-4) taking the loss for Delmarva.

The Shorebirds will now head back on the road for their next series starting on Tuesday night as they face the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, with first pitch coming from Atrium Health Ballpark at 7:00 p.m.
