Shorebirds Drop Game Three to Nationals

Fred Nats Out-Slug Delmarva

FREDERICKSBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (6-6) were defeated by the Fredericksburg Nationals (4-8) for the first time this season on Thursday night by a score of 12-6.

The Shorebirds scored first in the second inning on an RBI by Luis Gonzalez in his first Single-A at-bat as his opposite-field knock was just enough to score Anthony Servideo on a close play at the plate to give Delmarva a 1-0 lead.

But the Fred Nats quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Brady House homered on the first pitch of the frame to even the score at one. They'd then take the lead on an RBI single by Roismar Quintana to give the Nationals a 2-1 edge.

They'd add two unearned runs in the third to extend their advantage to 4-1.

The deficit for Delmarva would grow to 6-1 in the fourth on RBIs by Donovan Casey and Armando Cruz as the Nationals scored two runs for the third consecutive inning.

Roismar Quintana struck again for an RBI triple in the fifth to push the lead to 7-1. Brady House delivered two more runs for the Fred Nats in the sixth on a single with Cortland Lawson and Robert Hassell III both scoring to put Delmarva in a 9-1 hole.

The Shorebirds, however, would make things interesting in the seventh. With runners at first and second, Stiven Acevedo singled to center to score Creed Willems, making it 9-2. After a walk to Jackson Holliday loaded the bases, Samuel Basallo lined a single into center field to score Luis Gonzalez, cutting the deficit to 9-3. With the bases still loaded, Anderson De Los Santos drew a walk to force in another run to make it a five-run game. Elio Prado was then hit by a pitch to trim the deficit to 9-5. They'd grab one last run on a wild pitch as Samuel Basallo just made it home on a beautiful head-first slide to complete a five-run inning to get within striking distance at 9-6.

Delmarva would not be able to hold the momentum as the Fred Nats produced a key insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a double by Cortland Lawson to push the lead back to four at 10-6. Two more runs came in an inning later on RBIs by Sammy Infante and Roismar Quintana, to make it 12-6 Nationals and they'd go on to win by that score.

Miguel Gomez (2-0) was the winning pitcher in relief with Delmarva starter Jared Beck (0-1) taking the loss.

Luis Gonzalez was a key figure in the offense on Thursday in his first start with the Shorebirds as he picked up an RBI in his first at-bat while also scoring two runs. Jackson Holliday reached base a team-high four times as he singled and drew three walks.

The series between the Shorebirds and the Nationals continues on Friday with Juan De Los Santos getting the ball for Delmarva against Mason Denanburg for Fredericksburg. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
