Delmarva Unable to Hold Early Lead

Salisbury, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (0-4) were defeated by the Salem Red Sox (1-3) in their home opener at Perdue Stadium by a score of 5-2.

Riley Cooper got the call as the Opening Night starter for the Shorebirds. The left-hander delivered in his first professional appearance as he struck out five with no walks while not allowing any runs in three innings.

Delmarva would then grab the lead in the bottom of the third as a single by Aneudis Mordán scored Leandro Arias with a throwing error on the same play bringing home Anderson De Los Santos to make it 2-0 Shorebirds.

The Red Sox would answer both of those runs in the fifth as Miguel Bleis singled a run home to cut the Delmarva lead to 2-1. Bleis would score from third base moments later on an RBI single by Antonio Anderson as the Red Sox evened the game at two.

In the sixth, Salem would grab the lead on a two-out, RBI single by Andy Lugo to give the Red Sox a 3-2 edge.

Two more runs would score in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch to put Delmarva in a 5-2 hole.

The bullpen for the Red Sox would slam the door on Delmarva as the Shorebirds could not muster any rallies in the late innings as they would fall to Salem 5-2, suffering their fourth consecutive defeat.

Zach Fogell (1-0) earned the win in relief for Salem with Harif Frias (0-1) taking the loss for Delmarva. Isaac Stebens (1) picked up the save.

The Shorebirds will try to get their first win on Thursday night as Nestor German makes his professional debut against left-hander Noah Dean for Salem. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
