*SALISBURY, MD: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (23-20) fell one run short in the series finale against the Lynchburg Hillcats (22-23) as the Cleveland Guardian's affiliate rallied late to win game six 2-1.
The Shorebirds needed just three pitches in the bottom of the first to take the lead. After a leadoff double by Angel Tejada, Carter Young swapped spots with him and doubled into the left field corner, making it 1-0 Delmarva.
The game was locked in at 1-0 for the majority of the afternoon thanks to the efforts of both starting pitchers. Deivy Cruz delivered his best start of the season, tossing 5 shutout innings with 3 strikeouts, facing just two over the minimum during his time on the mound.
His counterpart, Yorman Gomez, was equally as impressive as he went 5.2 innings, striking out a season-best 8 batters. He did not allow a base runner after the second inning, retiring the final 12 batters of his outing.
With the score still 1-0 in the seventh, the Hillcats tied the game on a sacrifice fly from Wuilfredo Antunez as Jose Devers scored from third base.
They'd small-ball their way to another run in the eighth as a sacrifice fly by Maick Collado with the bases loaded brought home Marc Filia, giving Lynchburg their first lead at 2-1.
In the ninth, the Shorebirds put the tying run aboard on a two-out single by Anderson De Los Santos, but Magnus Ellerts got Adam Crampton to foul out to first base, sealing a 2-1 victory for the Hillcats in the finale.
Yeury Gervacio (1-1) was the winning pitcher in relief for Lynchburg with Juan De Los Santos (1-4) taking the loss for Delmarva. Magnus Ellerts (4) notched his second save of the week.
The Shorebirds now head back on the road starting Tuesday with a doubleheader against the Fredericksburg Nationals at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. First pitch of game one is scheduled at 5:05 p.m.
