Shorebirds Hold off RiverDogs to Win Game Four

De Los Santos and Young Deliver Big Performances in Delmarva Win

CHARLESTON, SC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-16) evened the series with the Charleston RiverDogs (15-22) thanks to an 8-5 win on Friday night.

The Shorebirds got on the board in the first inning with three early runs, starting with an RBI single by Carter Young to score Elio Prado. Anderson De Los Santos then drove home Samuel Basallo with a double to left-center. They then scored an unearned run on an error off the bat of Angel Tejada as Young touched home on the play to make it a 3-0 game after an inning.

It remained 3-0 for a while thanks to Edgar Portes who silenced the RiverDogs by tossing a season-best four innings while matching his career-high with six strikeouts.

In the sixth, the RiverDogs made it a ballgame with a two-run double by Christopher Barete to cut the Delmarva lead to one at 3-2.

It stayed 3-2 into the eighth inning until the Shorebirds added back to their lead with another RBI double by Anderson De Los Santos to bring home Carter Young, pushing Delmarva's edge to 4-2.

Charleston instantly got that run right back in the bottom on a triple by Jhon Diaz, but the throw to third base went into the dugout, awarding him home and making it a 4-3 game.

In the top of the ninth, the Shorebirds got a pair of clutch hits to put the game away for good. Carter Young muscled a two-out base hit to center that scored both Luis Gonzalez and Elio Prado to extend the lead back to three. Anderson De Los Santos then capped a career night with a no-doubt, homer to deep left field to give the Shorebirds their largest advantage at 8-3.

Charleston made things interesting in the ninth after a two-run home run by Cooper Kinney, but Juan Nuñez struck out Jhon Diaz to end the game, securing an 8-5 win for Delmarva.

Yaqui Rivera (1-2) was the winning pitcher in relief for Delmarva with Juan Nuñez (1) earning his first career save by retiring the final 12 batters. Charleston starter Marcus Johnson (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

Anderson De Los Santos delivered the best performance of his young career as he smacked four hits to collect four RBIs, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle. Carter Young picked up his second three-hit game as a pro and first this season while driving in three runs. Elio Prado extended his current hit streak to eight games with two base knocks, scoring each time he reached base.

Moises Chace gets the ball in game five for the Shorebirds and he'll match up with Jonny Cuevas for the RiverDogs. First pitch of Saturday's game is at 6:05 p.m.
