Another Big Night for Holliday Leads Delmarva to Victory

*SALISBURY, MD: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (4-1) made it two in a row against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (1-3) with a 12-2 victory on Wednesday night.

For the second consecutive game, the Shorebirds fell behind 2-0 early as Wilber Sanchez put Kannapolis ahead in the second inning on a two-run double.

Delmarva counterpunched in the bottom of the inning as they manufactured three runs with two outs on a bases-loaded walk to Carter Young, and a two-run double by Jackson to put the Shorebirds ahead 3-2.

The pitching would settle in for both sides after the frame as the score remained 3-2 all the way into the seventh inning. But that's when Shorebirds' bats came alive.

Samuel Basallo pushed the lead up to three as his third hit of the night scored Douglas Hodo and Carter Young to make it 5-2. Trendon Craig brought Jackson Holliday home on a sacrifice fly, and Stiven Acevedo finished off the inning with an RBI double to score Basallo, pushing the lead to 7-2 after seven innings.

In the eighth, the scoring continued as Carter Young brought home a pair with a two-run single. The next batter, Jackson Holliday, scored two more with a triple to left-center as Adam Crampton and Carter Young each touched home. Stiven Acevedo concluded the inning with another RBI as he scored Holliday on a sacrifice fly to give Delmarva a ten-run advantage at 12-2.

Alejandro Mendez recorded the final three outs in the ninth to put a bow on another impressive showing by the 'Birds.

Edgar Portes (2-0) was awarded the win out of the bullpen as he dealt 3.1 innings, facing the minimum of ten batters during his outing. Starting pitcher Shane Murphy (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Kannapolis.

Jackson Holliday was the story for the Shorebirds offensively as he produced his second 4-RBI game of the season with his double and his first career triple scoring two runs each. Carter Young broke out for a 3-RBI game with Samuel Basallo manufacturing his third multi-RBI game of 2023, matching his season-high with three hits. Every member of the Shorebirds lineup reached base at least once with eight of the nine getting at least one hit, and five players scored two runs with Douglas Hodo scoring a career-best three times.

The pitching was fantastic again for the Shorebirds as they allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits as Deivy Cruz, Edgar Portes, Luis Sanchez, Hugo Beltran, and Alejandro Mendez combined for 15 strikeouts.

Delmarva now searches for their third consecutive win on Thursday night as they send their Opening Day starter, Juan Nunez to the mound to face Tanner McDougal for Kannapolis. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
