Shorebirds Shutout in Game 2 Against Wood Ducks

Two Eighth-Inning Runs Put Down East Over the Top

KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (14-13) were shut out in game two of their six-game series against the Down East Wood Ducks as the Texas Rangers' affiliate won 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Pitching was the story in the second game of the series as both teams struggled to manufacture runs. The Shorebirds got an excellent start of Jared Beck who dealt for innings of scoreless baseball with four strikeouts, two of them coming in the second inning to help him escape a bases-loaded situation with no runs scoring.

Down East starter, Joseph Montalvo was just as impressive by going four shutout frames himself with five strikeouts on just two hits.

Wyatt Cheney took over for Beck in the bottom of the fifth inning and followed his starter with an impressive outing of his own by striking out a career-high six across four innings.

It was a 0-0 ballgame in the bottom of the eighth and with two on and two out, Miguel Villarroel doubled off the wall in left to give the Wood Ducks a 2-0 lead.

That would prove to be enough for Down East as they would hold on for the 2-0 win as they shutout the Shorebirds, handing them their third straight loss.

Jackson Kelley (3-1) picked up the win for the Wood Ducks with Wyatt Cheney (1-3) taking the loss for Delmarva.

The Shorebirds' offense was limited to just four hits on Wednesday, but three of them came from Samuel Basallo as he produced his third three-hit game of the season.

Delmarva will look to snap their losing skid on Thursday night with Juan De Los Santos taking the mound. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
