LYNCHBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (2-2) fell in the series opener to the Lynchburg Hillcats (3-1) on Wednesday night as they were shutout 3-0.
The Hillcats applied instant pressure by loading the bases with two outs in the first, and they would register the first run with a bases-loaded walk to Angel Zarate to make it 1-0 Lynchburg.
But after the first inning, Delmarva starting pitcher, Jared Beck settled in. He would go on to allow just one base runner across the next four innings as he tossed five innings for the first time as a pro, allowing just one run on one hit with six strikeouts.
But Delmarva was outmatched by Lynchburg starting pitcher Yorman Gomez who fired six shutout frames, striking out six on three hits and no walks.
With the score still 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, the Hillcats produced two huge insurance runs on RBI singles by Jose Devers and Wuilfredo Antunez to extend the Lynchburg lead to 3-0.
Yorman Gomez entered for the ninth and despite the Shorebirds making him work, he went on to strike out the side to close out a 3-0 win in the series opener for the Hillcats.
Both starting pitchers factored into the final decision as Yorman Gomez (3-4) earned the win for Lynchburg with Jared Beck (1-3) taking the loss for Delmarva. Tomas Reyers (4) was awarded the save.
Despite the tough night offensively, Trendon Craig and Noelberth Romero both collected two hits with a single and double in the game.
The series continues on Thursday as Deivy Cruz gets the ball for Delmarva against Alonzo Richardson for the Hillcats with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
