KANNAPOLIS, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (12-14) suffered their second-straight defeat to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (13-14) on Thursday night by a score of 8-4.

The Cannon Ballers scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a long, RBI double by Ryan McCarthy to score Chris Lanzili, making it 1-0 Kannapolis.

The deficit grew by two more runs in the third on a two-run homer by Brooks Baldwin, putting the Shorebirds in a 3-0 hole after three innings.

Noelberth Romero would power the Shorebirds back within a run as he belted a two-run homer of his own over the left field wall to make it a 3-2 game in the fourth.

But Kannapolis would respond with a run in the bottom half on an RBI single by Troy Claunch to push the lead back to two runs at 4-2.

The Shorebirds would fall behind by three more in the fifth as Jhoneiker Betancourt pushed a run across with a sacrifice fly. Chris Lanzilli then hit his second home run in as many days as he blasted a two-run homer over the left-center wall to put Delmarva behind 7-2.

The offense for the 'Birds would put together another comeback attempt starting in the sixth thanks to a 433-foot home run off the bat of Trendon Craig that scored two, making it a 7-4 game.

The Ballers would get one of those runs back in the seventh on another sacrifice fly by Betancourt to score Brooks Baldwin, putting Delmarva down by four runs.

The Shorebirds were unable to generate any rallies in the final few innings and would fall the Cannon Ballers 8-4.

Logan Lyle (1-0) earned the win in relief with Edgar Portes (5-3) taking the loss as the starter for Delmarva.

The Shorebirds will look to now even the series on Friday night as they send right-hander Zack Showalter to the mound to face Peyton Pallete for Kannapolis with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
