Delmarva Narrowly Defeated by Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-17) fell one run short against the Charleston RiverDogs (16-22) on Saturday night by a score of 3-2.

Charleston produced all three of their runs in the second inning, starting with a bases-loaded walk to Julio Meza to force in the first run of the game. They then got another run home on a fielder’s choice groundout off the bat of Chandler Simpson. The final run of the inning was scored on a balk to put Delmarva in a 3-0 hole.

The Shorebirds would get on the board in the fifth as Douglas Hodo scored on a double play on a ball off the bat from Angel Tejada to make it a 3-1 game.

With the score still 3-1 in the eighth, the Shorebirds pulled within one on a two-out single by Stiven Acevedo as Carter Young touched home, pulling the Shorebirds within a tally at 3-2.

However, the Shorebirds were unable to get the tying run home in the ninth as Charleston held on for the 3-2 win.

Jonny Cuevas (1-3) earned the win for the RiverDogs with Moises Chace (3-2) taking the loss for Delmarva. Alex Cook (1) was awarded the save.

Douglas Hodo provided his seventh multi-hit game of the season with a single and double, scoring one of the two runs for the Shorebirds. Delmarva got great work from their bullpen as Reese Sharp and Alfred Vega combined for five shutout innings with Vega throwing a perfect three frames from the sixth through the eighth.

Delmavra will now look to earn a series and road-trip split on Sunday as Jared Beck takes the mound to face Jake Christianson for the RiverDogs with first pitch at 5:05 p.m.
