Anderson De Los Santos Delivers Winning Hit for Delmarva
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (1-1) picked up their first win of the second half with a walk-off victory over the Augusta GreenJackets (1-1) in ten innings by a score of 4-3.
The GreenJackets scored the first run of the game in the top of the third on an RBI single by Justin Janas to plate Ambioris Tavarez, making it 1-0 Augusta.
Delmarva countered by scoring a run on an infield hit by Angel Tejada in the bottom fourth as Noelberth Romero beat the throw to home with a nice slide to even the score at one.
With the score still tied in the sixth, Augusta manufactured two runs with the first coming home on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, followed by a sacrifice fly by Tyler Collins to put the GreenJackets ahead 3-1.
The 'Birds slowly worked their way back starting in the seventh as Brayan Hernandez cranked a no-doubt home run over the right-field wall to pull Delmarva within one at 3-2.
In the eighth, after the first two men reached in the inning, Anderson De Los Santos and Noelberth Romero helped the Shorebirds small-ball their way to a tie game as they produced consecutive sacrifice flies to score Samuel Basallo, tying the game at three.
Augusta would put the go-ahead run at third with one out in the ninth, but Edgar Portes evaded trouble with a strikeout and a flyout to right to keep the game tied. The Shorebirds put the winning run in Brayan Hernandez at second with one away, however, Samuel Strickland struck out the next two Delmarva hitters to force a tenth inning.
Hugo Beltran took the ball for the tenth and retired all three men he faced in order to keep the automatic runner stranded in scoring position.
In the Shorebirds' half of the tenth inning, it looked as if Samuel Basallo was going to win the game for Delmarva as he singled back up the middle, but Tyler Collins threw out the winning run of Rolphy Cruz at home plate to save the game for the time being. After a walk to Greg Cullen, Anderson De Los Santos delivered the dagger for good as he singled into left to score Samuel Basallo with ease to complete a 4-3, extra innings victory.
Hugo Beltran (3-0) was the winning pitcher for Delmarva with Samuel Strickland (1-1) taking the loss for Augusta.
Samuel Basallo and Brayan Hernandez played key roles offensively for the Shorebirds as Basallo was 2/4 with a pair of runs scored, including the winning run in the tenth while Hernandez hit his third home run of the season, collecting two total hits in the game. Eight of the nine Delmarva starters collected at least one hit on the night. On the pitching side, Edgar Portes struck out a new, career-high 7 batters in relief.
The Shorebirds and GreenJackets will face off in a rubber match on Sunday afternoon with Alfred Vega getting the start for Delmarva against Jared Johnson for Augusta with first pitch coming at 2:05 p.m.
