Errors, Walks Cost Ems
It doesn't happen often but a team can get out hit and win. Eugene left seven men on base as they out hit Spokane 6-3, but errors and walks cost them the victory as they fell 7-2 in front of 2,536 at PK Park.
It doesn't happen often but a team can get out hit and win. Eugene left seven men on base as they out hit Spokane 6-3, but errors and walks cost them the victory as they fell 7-2 in front of 2,536 at PK Park.
It came off the rails for the Ems (5-7, 19-31) in the fourth, when starter Eury Ramos (1-2) walked back-to-back batters to start the inning. He then hit Curtis Terry, the third time in four games that he was hit, before getting Diosbel Arias and Jonah McReynolds to strike out.
It looked like Ramos would get out of the inning unscathed as a fly ball went to right field but it dropped quickly and, despite a diving effort by Nelson Velazquez, fell and rolled to the wall, scoring three runs. Ramos' day was done after that, and his book was closed when Yan De La Cruz got Tanner Gardner to line out.
Ramos went 3.2 innings and gave up just one hit, but three runs on two walks and six strikeouts.
The Ems scored a run in the bottom of the inning when Velazquez walked to lead off. After a fly out and a wild pitch, Velazquez stood at second with one out when Jake Slaughter singled to right field, scoring Velazquez and making it a 3-1 game.
De La Cruz faced the minimum in the fifth, but struggled in the sixth when he walked Jax Biggers. A Terry single moved Biggers to third before Arias singled and drove in Biggers. McReynolds hit a sac bunt that was thrown away by Grant Fennell, loading the bases.
Francisco Ventura hit a ball to Fennell, who was playing in and tried to get the runner going home. But a wild throw allowed two runs to score, making it a 6-1 game. Mitch Stophel came in and gave up a sac fly to make it 7-1 before striking out Isaias Quiroz to end the inning.
Eugene answered back in the bottom of the inning, when Velazquez tripled with one out. Slaughter then walked and the pitch went wild, scoring Velazquez.
The Ems will have a chance to win the series tomorrow when they send Faustino Carrera to the mound against Tai Tiedemann for the Indians. It is Sluggo's Birthday and $1 Hot Dogs. Get tickets now at emeraldsbaseball.com.
