EASTLAKE, OH – Jake Fox broke a scoreless tie with an RBI triple and added a three-run homer, powering the Lake County Captains (33-30, 64-64) to a 5-1 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (29-36, 60-70) on Saturday night at Classic Auto Group Park.

Euribiel Ángeles went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run for the Lugnuts, who received four scoreless innings from Gunnar Hoglund before Fox – no relation to the former Lugnut of the same name – feasted against reliever Yehizon Sanchez.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Tyresse Turner tripled to right against Sanchez and Fox followed with a triple of his own over the head of right fielder Colby Thomas, putting Lake County up 1-0. Chase DeLauter then singled him in for a 2-0 lead.

Ángeles responded with his seventh home run of the season in the sixth inning, halving the deficit. The 21-year-old infielder is batting .429 (15-for-35) in September.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Fox blasted his eighth home run of the season with Will Bartlett and Turner aboard to put the game out of reach.

Lake County starter Parker Messick scattered seven singles in addition to Ángeles’ roundtripper in six innings, striking out seven. Josh Wolf blanked the Lugnuts in the seventh and eighth before Magnus Ellerts fanned three after issuing a leadoff walk to Ángeles in the ninth.

Mark Adamiak struck out the side in a perfect eighth for the Lugnuts, who received a 3-for-4 performance from Joshwan Wright and a 2-for-4 showing from Danny Bautista, Jr.
One game remains in the 2023 season, with Lansing right-hander Mitch Myers dueling with Lake County lefty Ryan Webb at 1 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit lansinglugnuts.com or call (517) 485-4500.
