Sky Carp score four in 9th to walk off Nuts

BELOIT, Wisc. – Cody Morissette capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run double, and the Beloit Sky Carp (17-28) stunned the Lansing Lugnuts (17-28), 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at ABC Supply Stadium.

Tyler Soderstrom swatted his team-leading ninth home run of the year and drove in three runs, and Shohei Tomioka made his 2022 debut for the Lugnuts, who lost five of six in the series.

Tomioka followed Hogan Harris to the mound, after the lefty set a dominant tone with two perfect innings and four strikeouts. Tomioka fared well himself, allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out three over four innings.

Behind a Soderstrom fourth-inning two-run homer, a Joshwan Wright seventh-inning RBI single, and a Soderstrom eighth-inning RBI double, the Lugnuts brought a 4-1 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

But the Sky Carp struck back against Brock Whittlesey, shaving the deficit to one run on a Ynmañol Mariñez two-run homer. Whittlesey retired Dalvy Rosario on a groundout, allowed a single to Davis Bradshaw, struck out Kyler Castillo, and gave up a single to Marcus Chiu to put the tying runs at first and second. Morissette followed by driving the first pitch from Whittlesey into the left field corner, plating Bradshaw and Chiu to end the game.

Lugnuts manager Phil Pohl was not present for the conclusion. Pohl was ejected for the first time in his managerial career, arguing in the fifth inning with home plate umpire Kevin Levine that Nuts batter Matt Cross was hit by a pitch.
