LILLINGTON, N.C. (July 5, 2018) - Patrick Sandoval allowed one hit and struck out nine over his five shutout innings for the Buies Creek Astros on Thursday night as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell 6-1 from Jim Perry Stadium.
Sandoval (1-0) did not allow his hit until the first batter of the fifth inning, and his nine whiffs helped him earn his first career High-A win with the Astros (48-36, 11-4).
It was an early start for the Astros' offense against Birds' (39-46, 5-10) starter Cory Abbott (1-4). Abraham Toro blasted an RBI double down the right field line in the first inning to score Corey Julks. It was the first time in the last six games that the Pelicans did not score first in the game.
In the second, Bryan De La Cruz and Chuckie Robinson hit back-to-back doubles to make it 2-0 before Cody Bohanek laced an RBI single, which gave the Astros a 3-0 advantage.
The Pelicans fought back in the sixth as D.J. Wilson plated Yeiler Peguero with an RBI ground out, but the Astros answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth when Toro scored on a double play.
Toro stuck again in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer and Osvaldo Duarte crushed a solo shot of his own later in the inning to make it a 6-1 advantage for the Astros.
Wladimir Galindo picked up two hits for the Pelicans in the loss.
