AKRON, OH- East Windsor, CT native Aaron Civale turned in a quality start to win his fourth game and help the Akron Rubberducks to a 4-3 win over the Hartford Yard Goats Tuesday night, before 3,192 at Canal Park. Civale, Cleveland's third round draft choice out of Northeastern in 2016, pitched six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. He did not walk anybody and struck out four, as the Ducks spoiled the opener of the Yard Goats six-game road trip and snapped Hartford's three-game winning streak.
Civale, who improved to 4-1, was helped by an Akron (40-30) rally in the sixth inning. Bobby Bradley greeted Rayan González with a home run to left-center. Following a walk, Gonzalez was then removed because of an injury. Reliever Scott Griggs surrendered a two-out, two-run triple to Ka'ai Tom, and first place Akron took the lead for good.
A two-out run-scoring single by Sicnarf Loopstok staked Akron to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Hartford (33-36) tied it in the fourth on three straight singles by Mylz Jones, Sam Hilliard and Brian Mundell.
The Yard Goats took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Mundell, before the Rubber Ducks staged their comeback.
Hartford managed to outhit the Ducks, 10-7, led by Jones, who had three hits and two runs scored. Hilliard and Rodgers each had two hits, while Mundell collected two RBI. Starter Evan Grills pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits. He did not issue any walks and struck out seven.
Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 7:05. RHP Ryan Castellani will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP Domenic DeMasi for Akron. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
