El Paso Tops Round Rock 7-1 on Saturday Night

Four-Run Inning Helps Push Chihuahuas Ahead in Game Five

EL PASO, Texas – The El Paso Chihuahuas (52-37) clinched the series win on Saturday night thanks to a 7-1 victory over the Round Rock Express (46-43) at Southwest University Park.

Round Rock starter RHP Tyson Miller (2-5, 5.36) was tagged with the night’s loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks during his 2.2 innings on the mound. The righty also struck out five. El Paso reliever LHP Ray Kerr (3-0, 3.48) got the win with a scoreless 2.0 innings that saw three hits and two punchouts.

Along the Train Tracks:

  • The Chihuahuas put runners across home in the second inning to start the night’s scoring. With SS Eguy Rosario on base thanks to a single, 2B C.J. Hinojosa blasted a home run to left field that scored the pair.
  • The Express made it a 2-1 game in the third after RF Bubba Thompson reached first on a force out that caught C Jack Kruger at second. A single from CF Steven Duggar allowed Thompson to move to third before SS Ezequiel Duran’s single sent his teammate home.
  • El Paso added one of their own in the bottom of the frame when RF Taylor Kohlwey scored thanks to a double, wild pitch and single from Rosario.
  • An inning later, the Chihuahuas broke the scoring open with a four-spot in the fourth. LF Luis Liberato took advantage of a Round Rock fielding error to score El Paso’s first run of the inning. The left fielder knocked a leadoff single and moved to second as Kohlwey singled with two outs before finding home.
  • The Express error allowed Chihuahuas C Luis Campusano to find first base and moved Kohlwey to second. DH Brent Rooker cleared the bases with a home run and gave El Paso its 7-1 lead.
  • Round Rock tallied five hits through the final five frames, but was unable to add any additional runs to their total as El Paso cruised to the 7-1 win.

E-Train Excerpts:

  • CF Steven Duggar made his Round Rock debut on Saturday night. The outfielder batted second and finished the contest 1-for-4 with one strikeout.
  • All five Round Rock relievers finished the night without allowing an earned run. RHP Jason Bahr allowed four runs during his 1.1-inning outing that were all unearned due to the Express fielding error. Bahr was followed by RHP Demarcus Evans, RHP Nick Snyder, RHP Daniel Robert and RHP Yerry Rodriguez, who combined to throw four innings, one apiece, and allow two hits while striking out three batters.
  • Express 1B Andy Ibáñez and 2B Diosbel Arias both recorded multi-hit performances on Saturday. Ibáñez finished 2-for-4 with two doubles while Arias hit 2-for-4 with two singles.

Next up: Round Rock and El Paso finished up their six-game series at Southwest University Park on Sunday night. Chihuahuas RHP Matt Waldron (1-2, 9.20) is set to start against an Express pitcher to be determined. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.
