Sugar Land Claims Series Win Over Round Rock on Saturday 

Express Drop 10-1 Contest as Space Cowboys Lead Series 4-1

SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Sugar Land Space Cowboys (46-58) claimed the series win over the Round Rock Express (55-49) with a 10-1 victory on Saturday night at Constellation Field.

Round Rock starter RHP Cole Winn (7-3, 5.93) took the night’s loss after allowing four earned runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Sugar Land starter RHP Brandon Bielak (3-4, 3.08) went home with the win after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings that saw two hits, three walks and five punchouts. Space Cowboys RHP JP France earned his second save of the season with one unearned run, three hits, four walks and six Ks in 4.0 frames.

Along the Train Tracks:

  • The Space Cowboys jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when SS David Hensley hit a leadoff double, stole third then scored as RF Lewis Brinson singled. CF Corey Julks scored the frame’s second run after when DH Taylor Jones hit a single.
  • Sugar Land added to its lead with one run in both the third and fourth innings. 1B J.J. Matijevic scored on a Yanier Diaz double in the third while Hensley found home in the fourth on a fielder’s choice.
  • The home team dropped a six-spot in the fifth inning and increased its lead to 10-0. After Jones and 3B Franklin Barreto both doubled, the two scored from third and second base, respectively, on a wild pitch and Express error. Another two runs came in when LF Marty Costes scored himself and 2B Alex De Goti with a home run. The inning’s final two runs came home when Hensley and Julks walked, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and scored on a Round Rock fielding error.
  • The Express avoided a shutout with one run in the eighth inning. 2B Mark Mathias and LF Nick Solak hit back-to-back singles to start the frame before Mathias scored as C Sam Huff hit a single.

E-Train Excerpts:

  • Round Rock’s pitching staff threw four wild pitches for the third time this season and first since June 9 in Las Vegas. RHP Cole Winn, RHP Spencer Patton, RHP Demarcus Evans and RHP Chase Lee all tossed one apiece on Saturday night.
  • Express RHP Chase Lee extended his scoreless streak to 7.1 innings with a 2.0-inning shutout relief performance on Saturday night. The righty allowed two hits and struck out one batter.

Next up: Round Rock and Sugar Land finish up the six-game series with a scheduled 6:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday night at Constellation Field. Express LHP Dallas Keuchel (0-0, 2.08) is set to start against Houston Astros rehabbing RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (0-0, 6.00).
