Late Surge Leads Round Rock to 6-5 Win Over Sugar Land

ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Round Rock Express (6-3) rallied from a late 5-2 deficit to top the Sugar Land Skeeters (7-2) by a final score of 6-5 on Saturday night at Dell Diamond, earning its first win in the season series between the two Lone Star State foes. E-Train

ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Round Rock Express (6-3) rallied from a late 5-2 deficit to top the Sugar Land Skeeters (7-2) by a final score of 6-5 on Saturday night at Dell Diamond, earning its first win in the season series between the two Lone Star State foes. E-Train SS Yonny Hernandez provided the knockout blow with a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth.

Round Rock reliever RHP Spencer Patton (1-0, 0.00) got the win after 1.2 scoreless innings in which he allowed two hits and two walks while tallying a strikeout. Skeeters RHP Jojanse Torres (0-1, 9.00) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five and walking two during his 2.1 innings on the mound.

The Express opened up scoring in the bottom of the first inning when LF Delino DeShields sent a leadoff home run 385 feet into left field for an early 1-0 lead over the Skeeters.

Sugar Land added three runs of their own in the top of the third inning. C Garrett Stubbs and DH Jake Meyers hit back-to-back singles before stealing third and second base, respectively. Stubbs found home first as Round Rock turned a double play, leveling the game at 1-1. Soon after, SS Alex De Goti hit a home run of his own, scoring Meyers to secure a 3-1 lead for the Skeeters.

The Express pulled closer in the bottom of the third inning when DeShields singled then scored his second run of the night on a John Hicks RBI double.

Skeeters RF Bryan De La Cruz scored a fourth run for Sugar Land after De Goti hit a triple to center field in the top of the fifth inning. Sugar Land increased its lead to 5-2 in the sixth as LF Jose Siri found home as Stubbs tallied his second hit of the night, an RBI double.

Round Rock capped off its first comeback win of the season with four runs on six hits in the eighth inning. RF Carl Chester and 1B Elier Hernandez began the inning with consecutive singles before C Yohel Pozo’s double, one of three hits on the night for the backstop, drove Chester home. After an RBI single by DeShields, Yonny Hernandez gave Round Rock the lead for good with a two-run single.

Patton and RHP Joe Barlow teamed up to work around a bases-loaded situation in the top of the ninth inning, securing the thrilling 6-5 victory for the E-Train. Barlow earned his second save of the year by striking out Siri on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded to seal the win.

The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon at Dell Diamond with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. Round Rock LHP Brock Burke (0-1, 33.75) is scheduled to get the start against rehabbing Houston Astros LHP Framber Valdez.
