E-Train Rally Falls Short in Game Two Against Space Cowboys

Round Rock Offense Cannot Complete Comeback in 9-5 Defeat

ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Round Rock Express (4-4 | 48-34) were defeated by the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (2-6 | 35-48) by a final score of 9-5 at Dell Diamond on Wednesday night. The E-Train’s winning streak over Sugar Land was halted at five games after the loss. Express

ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Round Rock Express (4-4 | 48-34) were defeated by the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (2-6 | 35-48) by a final score of 9-5 at Dell Diamond on Wednesday night. The E-Train’s winning streak over Sugar Land was halted at five games after the loss.

Express starter RHP Seth Nordlin (0-1, 9.00) took home the loss after 4.0 innings of work that saw four earned runs on seven hits. Space Cowboys reliever RHP Joel Kuhnel (1-0, 1.69) earned the win after allowing just one hit and recording two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief.

Along the Train Tracks:

  • Sugar Land scored two runs in the top of first after CF Marty Costes led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from DH Jon Singleton. With two out, LF J.J. Matijevic launched a solo home run to cap off the inning.
  • In the third inning, Costes tripled again, scoring 1B Luke Berryhill, who had led off with a single. The Space Cowboys made it a 4-0 game on a shallow single from Singleton that plated Costes.
  • Round Rock got on the board in the fourth after a sacrifice fly from SS Jonathan Ornelas scored C Sam Huff.
  • The visitors saw another home run in the fifth inning when Singleton’s solo shot put them ahead 5-1. Express LF Sandro Fabian and 3B Davis Wendzel each answered in the bottom of the frame with solo home runs of their own to keep Round Rock in the game 5-3.
  • Sugar Land SS Shay Whitcomb smacked a three-run home run to extend the lead to 8-3 in the seventh after the two batters before him had reached base via a hit by pitch and single. 2B Pedro Leon then scored LF JJ Matijevic to put the Space Cowboys up 9-3.
  • The Express started a two-out rally in the ninth after loading the bases on a single, walk and hit by pitch. 2B Justin Foscue doubled in two runs, but a pop up in foul territory ended the game and the 9-5 score stood final.

E-Train Excerpts:

  • Express starter RHP Seth Nordlin made his first start of the season at the Triple-A level on Wednesday and threw 4.0 innings that saw seven hits and four runs with no walks and no strikeouts.
  • Round Rock 3B Davis Wendzel launched his team-high 16th home run of the season on Wednesday, which was his first home run in 12 games. His last longball was hit on June 17 against El Paso.
  • After allowing four runs by the Space Cowboys in the seventh inning, Round Rock continues to see a negative run differential in late innings and have now been outscored 70-47 in the seventh inning.

Next up: Round Rock will face the Sugar Land Space Cowboys in game three at Dell Diamond on Thursday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT. Express RHP Taylor Hearn (1-2, 4.15) is slated to face Space Cowboys LHP Nick Allgeyer (3-2, 5.09).
