Asheville, NC (August 18, 2026) – The Brooklyn bats exploded on Tuesday night, scoring nine runs on 10 hits en route to a 9-1 win over the Asheville Tourists to open their six-game series in North Carolina. John Spikerman, who was acquired from the Phillies as part of a package in exchange for LHP Brooks Raley, hit a pair of homers – his first two in professional ball – to lead the offensive charge.
LHP Nicolas Carreno (3-1) got the win for the Cyclones after tossing 5.2 frames, allowing just one unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven. In three August starts, the 20-year-old southpaw is now 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Over the last seven games, Brooklyn’s starting pitching has combined to allow two runs, one earned, over 38.1 innings.
Spikerman opened the scoring on Tuesday night with a solo shot in the top of the second – his first career home run – but Asheville answered in their half of the frame, scoring an unearned run courtesy of a Ronald Hernandez fielding error that tied things up at 1-1 after two.
In the third Brooklyn continued the see-saw scoring when Aidan Smith worked a one-out walk and stole second before coming around to score on Trey Snyder’s first RBI knock of the night – a well-struck double – that gave Brooklyn a 2-1 advantage.
The teams traded zeroes until the top of the seventh when Brooklyn blew the game wide open with a four-spot. Aidan Smith gave Brooklyn some breathing room when he stole home on the back end of a double steal that made it 3-1. But after waiting more than 200 at-bats to hit his first professional home run, John Spikerman waited just one at-bat before connecting on the second homer of his career. This one was a three-run shot that put Brooklyn in the driver’s seat, 6-1 in the 7th.
Brooklyn tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to make the final score 9-1 on Tuesday evening.
Game Notes:
- Elian Peña made his Cyclones debut, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, but he did reach base twice via base on balls.
- Aidan Smith stole four bases on the night and has 22 swipes on the season – including eight in just 11 games with the Cyclones.
- Rafi Vazquez tossed 1.1 shutout frames out of the Brooklyn bullpen and has now allowed just one run over his last 7.1 innings of work.
