Sunday afternoon was the final chapter to the Buffalo Bisons playing their home games at Trenton Thunder Ballpark in New Jersey and boy did the Herd give the fans at their temporary home one last amazing memory.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Kevin Smith and Tyler White hit back-to-back no-doubt home runs to give the Bisons the 3-2 victory over the Syracuse Mets. The victory gave the Herd a six-game series sweep of their Thruway Series rival and a 11-1 record in their final homestand in Trenton.
Overall, the Bisons were 29-13 at Trenton Thunder Ballpark, currently the best home record in all of Triple-A baseball.
Buffalo was held to just two hits through the first seven innings, but had the two biggest bats in their line up due in the eighth. With two outs, Kevin Smith pulled Buffalo even when he crushed a 1-2 offering left over the plate by reliever, Roel Ramirez. The home run was Smith’s second in as many games and 18th on the season, one shy of three hitters for the most in Triple-A baseball.
Smith’s 54 RBI lead the Triple-A East.
Four pitches later, it was White’s turn. The veteran slugger who also homered in Saturday’s win turned on another Ramirez fastball and drove it just to the left of where’s Smith’s homer left the yard. The homer gave him eight on the season and six in his last eight games.
Jacob Waguespack made the lead stand with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. The righty entered the game in the eighth inning and retired the last six batters he faced, three via the strikeout.
Bowden Francis started for the Herd and struck out six in 5.2 innings of work. The only blemish on his record came in the fourth inning when he allowed a single and issued a one-out walk in front of a Drew Jackson two-run double.
Buffalo scored their first run of the gam in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit. Logan Warmoth and Richard Urena led off the frame with walks. After a sacrifice bunt from Vinny Capra in his first career Triple-A game, Warmoth scored on an RBI-groundout from Forrest Wall.
The Bisons now have a pair or road series against Worcester and Lehigh Valley before coming home to Buffalo for Opening Night on Tuesday, August 10.
