COLUMBIA, S.C. — Tyson Moran launched his first Carolina League homer in the sixth inning to draw Columbia within one run. The Fireflies eventually tied the game, but fell 10-3 to the Wilson Warbirds Tuesday night at Wilson Ballpark.

Moran hit his eighth homer of the season and first in the Carolina League to cut Wilson’s lead to 3-2 after a hot start from Shane Van Dam. The righty allowed three runs over five frames, but the bullpen couldn’t hold onto the lead. Jhon Reyes and Moises Amezquita allowed seven runs in the final two innings in Columbia’s series opening loss.

Play-by-Play

After Columbia rallied to tie the game, the Warbirds put their foot to the floor and scored seven runs between the seventh and eighth innings. Brady Ebel started the rally. He had a two-run homer in the seventh inning to break the tie and push the Warbirds in front 5-3. Ebel finished the night 3-5 with six RBI and a single shy of the cycle.

The big inning was the eighth. Wilson sent nine batters to the dish and ripped off four-straight hits, which Ebel capped off with a two-run triple to push the Warbirds advantage to 10-3. Jhon Reyes (L, 2-4) started the frame and Moises Amezquita got the final two outs in the inning. Reyes was tagged with four earned runs and Amezquita surrendered three.

The Fireflies got on the board in the top of the sixth. Connor Rasmussen drew a lead-off walk and then Tyson Moran scorched his first Carolina League homer over the right field wall to cut the lead to 3-2.

Columbia’s rally continued in the top of the seventh. Yandel Ricardo laid down a bunt single and stole second to set the table. Then, Connor Rasmussen golfed a single to right to score Ricardo to tie the game 3-3 before the stretch.

Carsten Sabathia III got things started for the Wilson Warbirds. The first baseman singled to right to start off the inning and advanced to scoring position on a base knock from Kyle Jones. Both hits were the first hits in the professional careers of the two Warbirds. After that, Brady Ebel broke the scoreless tie with a double to left-center field to score the pair of Warbirds.

In the fourth inning, Juan Ortuno reached on catcher’s interference from Ricson Gonzalez and came around on a Filippo Di Turi single to give the Warbirds a 3-0 lead.

Shane Van Dam worked five innings in the start. The righty struck out four and allowed three runs around four hits and a walk before passing the ball to the bullpen. Adrian Belen worked a scoreless inning, but had to throw 30 pitches in the inning. The scoreless frame allowed Columbia to tie the game late.

Carlos Carra retired the first 15 in order for Columbia. After that, Wilson’s starter spun six innings and allowed just two runs off as many hits before passing the ball to the bullpen. Luke Roupe (BS, 1; W, 1-0) was the only reliever needed. He earned the win in his Carolina League debut thanks to three one-run innings.

Columbia continues their series with the Wilson Warbirds tomorrow at Wilson Ballpark at 7:05 pm. RHP Michael Lombardi (2-3, 3.17 ERA) takes the ball for Columbia and Wilson counters with LHP Enderson Mercado (4-7, 7.96 ERA).
