Delmarva Rides Five-Run Fifth to Victory

SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-26) took care of business against the Salem Red Sox (20-26) on Friday night as they evened the series with a 7-1 victory.

The Shorebirds found themselves in trouble early as the Red Sox loaded the bases with one out in the second, but Alejandro Mendez kept Salem off the board by striking out back-to-back hitters to end the inning, keeping the bases full with nobody scoring.

Delmarva would seize that momentum and strike for five runs in the bottom half of the inning with Jalen Vasquez starting it off with an RBI single to score Anderson De Los Santos, making it 1-0. Delmarva then used a pair of sacrifice flies by Noelberth Romero and Randy Florentino to extend the lead to 3-0. Stiven Acevedo then concluded the frame with a two-run blast to left as he sent one out of the ballpark to give the Shorebirds a 5-0 advantage.

Randy Florentino would produce another sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to score Noelberth Romero, making it a 6-0 game.

In the sixth, Romero launched the second home run of the night for the Shorebirds as he sent his seventh of the season over the wall in the left to give Delmarva a 7-0 edge.

That would prove to be plenty of runs for the Delmarva pitching staff, led by Alejandro Mendez who dealt 2.2 innings of perfect relief, tying his career-high with five strikeouts along the way. Blake Money and Ty Weatherly made their Single-A debuts on Friday night and each tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Salem would break the shutout in the ninth, but Brayner Sanchez would finish things off to conclude a 7-1 victory for the Shorebirds.

Alejandro Mendez (3-1) earned the victory for Delmarva in relief with Cristian Nuñez (0-1) suffering the loss for the Red Sox as the starting pitcher.

Four different Shorebirds registered multiple hits, including Stiven Acevedo and Noelberth Romero who both went yard and drove home two runs. Randy Florentino drove in a pair with two sacrifice flies, and Jalen Vasquez singled twice while picking up his first professional RBI in the second.

Delmarva will send Luis De Leon to the mound on Saturday night as they look to take the series lead. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
