RENO, Nev. – Following a split series against the Las Vegas Aviators, the Reno Aces (21-18) will head to Sugar Land to take on the Space Cowboys (21-18), the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, in a six-game series at Constellation Field.

The Aces and Space Cowboys are currently tied for third place in the Pacific Coast League and will meet for the first time this season. The two squads are scheduled to face each other 12 times across two series in 2024. Sugar Land enters the series riding a five-game winning streak after taking care of the Salt Lake Bees on the road last week.

Last season, Sugar Land had the upper hand, winning eight of 12 regular-season matchups against Reno. The teams also met in the Pacific Coast League playoffs, where the Space Cowboys swept the Aces in a three-game series to advance to the Triple-A Championship.

Notable players on Sugar Land’s roster include infielder Brice Matthews and left-hander Colton Gordon.

Matthews, Houston’s No. 1 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is coming off a strong series against the Salt Lake Bees, highlighted by a dominant performance Saturday night when he hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with two home runs. In six games against the Aces last season, Matthews went 4-for-20 (.200) with two doubles and four RBIs. The former first-round pick has excelled against left-handed pitching this year, slashing .280/.439/.480 with two extra-base hits and six RBIs in 25 at-bats. He’ll look to stay hot against the Aces in the upcoming series.

Gordon, a left-hander in the Astros’ system, has been dominant to start the season. He leads the league with a 2.55 ERA in 42 1/3 innings, striking out 43 (second in the PCL) while issuing only eight walks. Gordon was a problem for the Aces last year, posting a 1.64 ERA in two starts, allowing two runs with eight strikeouts and two walks over 11 innings. The Astros’ No. 14 prospect’s best outing this season came on April 26 against the Tacoma Rainiers, when he tossed seven shutout innings without issuing a walk while striking out eight. He recently tallied a season-high nine strikeouts against Salt Lake, earning the win after limiting the Bees to two runs over six commanding innings. The lefty will look to continue his stellar start to the season in this series.

For Reno, Trey Mancini is a player to watch. The veteran first baseman is slashing a robust .306/.366/.483 with 11 doubles, five home runs, and 27 RBIs this season. He helped lead the Aces to three wins over the first-place Las Vegas Aviators during last week’s homestand, going 10-for-22 (.455) with a double, a home run, and five RBIs. Mancini has collected three hits in each of his last three games as the Aces head to Sugar Land.

Following the series in Sugar Land, Reno will return to Greater Nevada Field to host the Albuquerque Isotopes, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, beginning Tuesday, May 20.
