Reno, NV The Reno Aces (34-27) struggled to capitalize on scoring threats in a 9-5 loss to the Tacoma Rainiers (30-31) Friday night at Greater Nevada Field.

In front of their highest attendance of the season so far, a crowd of 7,306, the Aces went just 4-for-15 with runners in scoring position and couldn’t quite break through against Tacoma’s starter Marcus Walden.

The Rainiers hit four home runs and scored their first seven runs via the long ball. Tacoma entered the game with 36 homers away from Cheney Stadium, the third-lowest road total in the Pacific Coast League.

Despite the damage, Reno struck out Tacoma 14 times. Slade Cecconi fanned six while four Aces relievers combined for 4 1/3 innings and eight strikeouts. Joe Mantiply was nasty in his rehab appearance, striking out two in one inning of scoreless work.

Tristin English blasted his fifth home run as a member of the Aces, a 397-foot solo shot to right field. English entered the game hitting .343 with four doubles, four homers, and a 1.013 OPS over his last 18 contests.

Alek Thomas drove in three runs in a very productive night. Thomas singled, doubled, walked, and has 25 RBI over his last 18 games, punishing hits to all fields while delivering elite run production and outfield defense. English, Phillip Evans, Carson Kelly, and Diego Castillo all recorded multiple hits. Castillo has eight hits and four doubles in his last four games.

The six-game series continues Saturday night at 6:35 p.m.

Aces Notables:
