FREDERICKSBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (37-68, 14-25) returned to the win column with an emphatic 18-7 win over the Fredericksburg Nationals (64-40, 19-20).
The Fred Nats produced the first run of the game in the second inning on an infield single by Cristhian Vaquero, scoring Juan Cruz to make it 1-0.
Delmarva broke through for their best inning of the series in the fourth, scoring six times with two outs. DJ Layton opened the rally with a two-run single, giving the Shorebirds a 2-1 lead. Jordan Sanchez followed with a run-scoring single to make it 3-1. Moments later, Andrew Tess drove home two on his first hit of the night, extending the lead to 5-1. The inning concluded with a successful first-and-third steal as Andrew Tess stole second and Jhomnardo Reyes scored, putting the Shorebirds in front 6-1.
KK Clark put together a solid outing on the mound for Delmarva in his second start, allowing just two hits and one run over four innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Shorebirds' offense went back to work, scoring six more runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on eight walks by Fredericksburg. Two runs scored on wild pitches as Jaiden Lo Re and DJ Layton each touched home. A passed ball scored Andrew Tess, and three bases-loaded walks put Delmarva in front 12-2 after the sixth.
Everett Cooper III drove home a run for the Fred Nats in the seventh to make it 12-3.
In the eighth, the Shorebirds pushed home four more runs on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, with DJ Layton collecting the RBI. A wild pitch, a sacrifice fly from Jordan Sanchez, and an RBI single by Elvin Garcia put Delmarva in front, 16-3.
After Fredericksburg scored once in the eighth, the Shorebirds pushed home two more runs on an RBI single by Jordan Sanchez, his third hit and third RBI. An error followed, allowing DJ Layton to score and putting Delmarva at a season-high 18 runs.
The Fred Nats scored three runs in the ninth, but it was not nearly enough, as the Shorebirds coasted to an 18-7 victory.
Brendan Parks (4-1) earned the win in relief, while Marlon De La Cruz (0-4) took the loss for Fredericksburg.
Delmarva now looks to even the series on Friday, with Jake Dykhoff taking the mound against Alexander Meckley. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
