Shorebirds Lose on Walk-Off Balk in Extra Innings

Delmarva Falls to Fredericksburg in Walk-Off Fashion

FREDERICKSBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (36-68, 13-25) were defeated by the Fredericksburg Nationals (64-39, 18-19) in ten innings on Wednesday, 5-4.

After a scoreless first two innings, Jordan Sanchez (9) put the Shorebirds ahead with a 437-foot homer, his second straight game with a long ball, making it 1-0.

Fredericksburg snatched the lead in the bottom of the third, tying the game on a solo home run by Luke Dickerson (13). Then a two-run double by Hunter Hines put the Shorebirds behind 3-1.

It stayed a 3-1 game into the seventh until the Shorebirds mounted a rally, beginning with a two-out RBI double from Jaiden Lo Re to make it 3-2. DJ Layton tied the game moments later with a single. Two batters later, Jhomnardo Reyes put Delmarva ahead with his first hit and RBI in the Orioles' organization, as his single scored Layton and gave the Shorebirds a 4-3 lead.

It took one pitch in the bottom of the seventh for the Fred Nats to tie the game as Sir Jamison Jones (9) homered to even the score at four.

It remained tied through the end of regulation, with Adrian Heredia helping the Shorebirds get there with a season-high four innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on three hits.

After Delmarva stranded two and failed to score in the top of the tenth, the Fred Nats put runners on the corners with one out. With Coy James batting, Zac Lampton committed a balk, allowing the winning run to score as Fredericksburg won 5-4 in walk-off fashion.

Gus Hughes (1-0) was the winning reliever for Fredericksburg, while Zac Lampton (1-3) took the loss for Delmarva.

The Shorebirds try to end their losing streak on Thursday, with first pitch for Game 3 against the Fred Nats scheduled for 6:35 PM.
