Delmarva Unable to Get Bats Going in Defeat

KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (1-11) suffered their third straight defeat at the hands of the Down East Wood Ducks (7-5) by a score of 8-2.

The Wood Ducks grabbed a first-inning lead as Arturo Disla doubled down the third base line to score Gleider Figuereo, making it 1-0. They added another run on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Smith as Julian Brock touched home, putting Delmarva behind 2-0 after an inning.

In the fourth, Marcus Smith led off the inning with a triple, he'd score moments later on a sacrifice fly by Danyer Cueva to push the Down East advantage to 3-0. An additional run would score on a two-out, RBI single by Tommy Specht to make it a 4-0 game.

Another two-out run would score in the fifth on a base hit by Cueva that brought home Marcus Smith from second base, increasing the Shorebirds' deficit to 5-0.

Delmarva got on the board for the first time in the seventh on a fielder's choice by Brayan Hernandez, scoring Aneudis Mordan to pull the Shorebirds with four at 5-1.

Down East would quickly get that run back as Jesus Lopez hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, giving Down East a 6-1 advantage.

The Shorebirds put together another threat in the eighth as they loaded the base with two outs. They were gifted a run with a balk that forced in Thomas Sosa from third, but the Wood Ducks would get Stivem Acevedo to sharply line out to third to end the inning with Delmarva behind 6-2.

In the bottom half, the Wood Ducks would counter with two runs on a run-scoring single by Gleider Figuereo and a wild pitch to give Down East their largest lead at 8-2.

The Shorebirds offense was quiet in the ninth, and they were defeated 8-2 on Thursday night.

Kyle Larsen (1-1) was awarded the win in relief for the Wood Ducks with starting pitcher Ty Weatherly (0-1) taking the loss for the Shorebirds.

The series continues Friday night as Luis De León gets the ball for Delmarva versus Alejandro Rosario for the Wood Ducks. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
