Two newcomers to the Reno Aces bullpen, Joe Mantiply and Kevin McCanna, are looking to make a serious impact with the team in 2021. The pair of relievers enter after strong 2019 seasons, and in Mantiply’s case, 2020 big league experience.

Mantiply appeared in four big league games for the Diamondbacks last season, striking out two in just 2.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen. Mantiply also spent time with the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees, earning his first big league win in 2019 with the Yankees.

The Virginia Tech product has been playing professionally since 2013, and has racked up a career 21-13 record in 349.2 innings pitched across 214 minor league games. In his last year in Triple-A, Mantiply posted a 4.31 ERA in 25 games with a 1-0 record and one save

In 2019, McCanna threw 81.2 innings in 30 games for Double-A Jackson Generals and posted just a 2.09 ERA. The 13th-round draft pick out of Rice did a little bit of everything for the Generals, with five wins, two complete games in just eight starts and a save in his one save opportunity of the season. The 92 strikeouts on the season, a career best, came out to just over 10 strikeouts per nine innings.

McCanna made one start with the Aces at the start of the 2019 season, coming out on the losing end after surrendering two earned runs in 3.1 innings.

The pair will be versatile in the 2021 bullpen, and in McCanna’s case may be occasional parts of the rotation. Mantiply spending time with Arizona in 2020 may prove to be huge as well, with so many players having a year off thanks to COVID-19.
