Aces Take 2023 Opening Weekend Series vs. the Aviators

RENO, Nev. –The 2023 MiLB Opening Weekend saw the Reno Aces showcase their explosive offense with a series win over their Silver State rivals, the Las Vegas Aviators, Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, at Greater Nevada Field.

Diego Castillo went 5-for-5 in Friday’s season opener, part of an 18-hit, 13-run barrage by Reno’s bats. Phillip Evans blasted a two-run homer in the second, while P.J. Higgins hit a decisive three-run shot to deep left in the seventh. The Aces went 18-for-42 (.429) with five extra-base hits.

The run-scoring party didn’t stop there.

In Saturday’s 15-10 win, Buddy Kennedy made his season debut and went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double. Kennedy reached in four of five trips and drove in two. Ali Sánchez, went 4-for-5 with two runs scored in his first game for Reno. Through the first two games, the Aces went 34-for-78 (.436) with three homers.

On the mound, Blake Walston was stingy in his first start for Reno Saturday, tossing 3 ⅔ scoreless innings with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Walston owns a 2.72 ERA over his last 11 starts between Amarillo and Reno, dating back to last season.

Sunday’s finale saw Las Vegas capitalize with a seven-home run performance to a 13-2 win in Sunday’s series finale. Kevin Smith blasted three homers, while J.J. Bleday added two of his own.

Reigning Arizona Diamondbacks Organizational Pitcher of the Year, Brandon Pfaadt, continued to display his strikeout prowess with a seven-punchout performance in the loss.

Reno continues its Pacific Coast League title defense by hitting the road to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Tacoma Rainiers, Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, with six-game series that begins Tuesday, April 4th at 6:05 p.m. PT.

The Aces will return to Greater Nevada Field on Tuesday, April 11th, with a six-game series against the Sacramento River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
