Yasmany Tomas came to Reno to hit home runs, and he did just that. The Cuban slugger signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals last week, but his time with Reno will be remembered with a lot of loud cracks of the bat.

In 2018 and 2019, his two full seasons in Reno, El Tanque smacked 43 home runs in 208 games. So, a bomb once every five games. And 147 RBIs on top of that power. Despite the limited time in Reno, Tomas owns the sixth-most homers in team history with 44 total — thanks to three games with the team in 2015. 150 total RBIs has him 10th in that category as well.

Tomas’ best year came in 2019. The power hitter blasted 29 home runs, the fourth most in a single season in team history, and tied for 10th in team history in total bases with 239 to lead the team.

But Tomas’ 2019 saw improvements across the board — his .301 batting average was a stark improvement from the .262 average in 2018, he hit 17 more RBIs, doubled his walk total and raised his OBP, slugging and OPS considerably.

And just to cement himself as one of Triple-A’s best power hitters, Tomas won the 2019 Home Run Derby behind 19 homers.

The memory of Tomas that will likely stick the longest for fans was his four homer game in May of 2019. In front of the home crowd at Greater Nevada Field, Tomas went yard four times in six plate appearances with a career-best eight RBIs. The Aces won, 25-8 over Tacoma in a game that included a cycle by Matt Szczur.

Tomas’ minor league deal includes a spring training invite from the Nationals, where he will be looking to show the pop he put on full display in Reno.
