Aces Deal Series Loss to Sugar Land in Friendly Confines
RENO, Nev. – A week of close games brought entertaining baseball and plenty of memorable performances, as the Reno Aces took four of six games last week against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys at Greater Nevada Field.
RENO, Nev. – A week of close games brought entertaining baseball and plenty of memorable performances, as the Reno Aces took four of six games last week against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys at Greater Nevada Field.
The series opener was so close it needed an extra frame, Reno’s third in the past six games, but four runs in the extra inning gave the Space Cowboys a 7-4 win on April 28.
Pitching for the Aces was strong through nine innings in what amounted to a bullpen game, as Reno trotted out eight total pitchers in the contest. That included three scoreless innings in a starting effort from Joe Ross, while three others followed with run-free appearances including Yilber Díaz.

Extra-base hits were crucial for the Reno Aces in their Wednesday night game with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys on April 29, as Luken Baker tripled while Danny Serretti crushed a three-run homer to power Reno to a 5-2 victory.
That marked the second triple of the early season for Baker, the first time in his professional career that he has hit two triples in the same campaign. Overall, it marked the 16th three-bagger of the season for the Aces. Serretti’s homer was the second time this season an Ace has homered in his Triple-A debut, following in the footsteps of Christian Cerda who homered in his first at-bat back on April 18 against Las Vegas.
The bullpen was strong down the stretch, combining to toss the last 4.1 frames while allowing no hits and striking out seven. Of those seven, four belonged to Drey Jameson as he worked the seventh and eighth while tossing a total of 23 pitches.

Reno made it two in a row primarily thanks to Jacob Amaya on April 30, as he had a hand in all three Aces runs during a 3-2 win over the Space Cowboys. After leading off the second with a double and scoring on a balk, Amaya later hit a two-run homer in the fourth that put the Aces ahead for good.
That homer was the fourth of the season for Amaya, which is the best on Reno in the early goings.

Yet again Aces pitching was stiff throughout the contest, starting with the effort of starter Thomas Hatch as he worked 5.1 innings while allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts to just one free pass.
On to convert the save was Yilber Díaz, who notched the first Triple-A save of his career and just the second of his professional career. His first came back on May 14, 2022 as a member of the Visalia Rawhide.

May 1 was a rollercoaster of a game that went back-and-forth, but by its end came to a rest in favor of the Aces as they grabbed their first walk-off win of 2026 by a 4-3 margin.
LuJames Groover played the hero on a night in which he went 3-for-5 a double, run scored and RBI, which served as the game winner when he drove home Ryan Waldschmidt with a single. Luken Baker had originally given the Aces a 3-2 when he delivered a two-out, broken-bat double down the left-field line in the home half of the seventh.

Matt O’Neill hit Reno’s 17th triple of the season and his third homer of the year, making him the first Aces catcher in over a decade to do both in the same game, the last being Peter O’Brien on May 19, 2015 against Salt Lake. The 17 triples for Reno lead every level of professional baseball.
Starter Mitch Bratt yielded only one run on three hits in five full innings, striking out six batters without a walk to set his new Triple-A career best. That effort made Bratt the first Ace starter this season to finish a game with six strikeouts and no walks, and the first to do so since Tommy Henry did so on May 28, 2025 at Round Rock.
Reno’s bullpen had struck out four in a row and were looking for a fifth when the game’s tying run was scored in the ninth. Even still, Aces relievers combined to work four innings and allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Unfortunately for Reno, the winning streak stopped on a rain-soaked May 2 as the Aces left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and dropped an 8-7 decision to the Space Cowboys. Trailing 7-2, a homer from Baker sparked a wave of momentum for the Aces as they added another in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
All three runs in the eighth scored with two outs, the first from a Kristian Robinson single that was held in the shallow outfield at second base. Following was Christian Cerda who delivered a two-run home run that brought the Aces within one, but the bases were left loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

It was an impressive way for Reno to finish the series on May 3, as they produced their largest run-scoring inning of the year in the sixth to overcome an early 4-0 deficit and finish with a 9-6 victory over Sugar Land.
Hitting with the bases loaded was a theme for the Aces, at least in the sixth as they scored their seven tallies on four hits and four walks. The crushing blows were struck with a two-RBI double from Troy and a two-RBI single from Carlos Santana, the latter of whom was here on rehab.
Reno’s bullpen was nails yet again, as five relievers combined to throw six innings while allowing two runs on five hits. Earning the win was Gerardo Carrillo (4-2) despite allowing both of those tallies, while Drey Jameson converted his second save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Groover reached base safely in all six games this series and extended his team-leading streak to 26 consecutive games, a mark that is also second best in the Pacific Coast League. Amaya had the best average over the week at .421 (8-for-19), scoring six runs with two doubles, one homer and three RBI.
Baker also had a fine series, doing a little bit of everything by hitting .348 (8-for-23) with five runs scored, a double, a triple, a homer, five RBI, and a 1.053 OPS.
The Aces now hit the road for six games against the Sacramento River Cats, with the set starting on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. PT from Sutter Health Park.
