RENO, Nev. – Now complete with their first trip to west Texas, the Reno Aces return to friendly confines as they prepare for a six-game series that begins on Tuesday with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.
While last series ended in favor of the El Paso Chihuahuas by a 4-2 margin, the Reno Aces still had memorable highlights and moments.
Three times last series the Aces clobbered three homers, which included the first two-homer game of the season by an Ace from Jacob Amaya. Jack Hurley was on fire in four games, finishing with a team-best .643 (9-for-14) batting average while his nine hits were also a team best. Troy also had a hot series, and finds himself on a Triple-A best 10-game run scored streak.
This week’s series against Sugar Land will be the first meeting of the two teams in 2026, and the Aces will look to change their fortunes after losing each of the last two season series meetings with Sugar Land. In 2025 it was a 9-3 edge for the Space Cowboys, coming on the heels of an 8-4 edge in 2024.
Pitching struggled against Sugar Land in 2025, as the Aces pitched to a 7.23 ERA (83 er, 103.1 ip) which was their worst ERA against any opponent last season (second worst: 7.03, SAC). While their 99 total runs allowed were just sixth most of their nine opponents, the 8.25 runs per game average allowed to Sugar Land was Reno’s worst of any opponent in 2025.
Though Reno’s .286 (122-for-427) batting average against Sugar Land ranked fourth of nine opponents in 2025, their production in terms of runs scored (80, seventh), doubles (25, seventh), home runs (17, sixth), and walks (68, sixth) were all in the bottom half of opponents.
Though the Aces won each of the first two season matchups in 2022 (5-1) and 2023 (8-4), it is the Space Cowboys that hold the lead in the all-time matchup by a 20-22 margin. In the 42 total matchups, the Aces are batting .283 (415-for-1465) with 134 extra-base hits (55 home runs) and a .838 OPS. Of opponents with at least 42 games against Reno, the batting average against Sugar Land ranks ninth of 16 total opponents.
Meanwhile from the mound, Reno has worked to a 4.88 ERA (201 er, 370.2 ip) while punching out 379 total Space Cowboys to 216 walks. Of opponents with at least 42 games played, Reno’s 4.88 ERA ranks sixth of 19 opponents and is just mere points behind the similar 4.88 ERA (208 er, 384.0 ip) logged against Omaha.
Sugar Land enters the series with a 15-12 record, sitting two full games above the Reno Aces in a four-way tie for first place in the PCL standings. Entering at 5-5 in their past 10, the Space Cowboys are coming off a 4-2 series loss to Texas rival Round Rock, a series that featured a pair of doubleheaders. The Space Cowboys failed to score above five runs in any game and were outscored by a combined 32-23.
Leading the way at the dish last week was James Nelson, as he was 9-for-25 (.360) with two doubles, a homer and two RBI. He was one of two Space Cowboys over the .300 mark, as the other was Cavan Biggio who batted .308 (4-for-13) with two runs scored.

Sugar Land starters struggled to a 7.11 ERA (15 er, 19.0 ip) last week, going 0-2 despite allowing only one homer and striking out 24 to 10 walks. The bullpen struggled to keep it together, recording a 4.20 ERA (14 er, 30.0 ip) while picking up both wins with 32 strikeouts to 20 walks.
This Sugar Land squad features five of Houston’s top-30 prospects per MLB Pipeline, all of which are pitchers. The group is led by No. 6 overall prospect Ethan Pecko and No. 11 prospect Miguel Ullola, and Reno will see both in this series as Ullola is scheduled to start the opener on Tuesday while Pecko is slated for Friday’s contest.
So far in 2026 Pecko has made just one start, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing two hits. Meanwhile, Ullola is 1-2 in five starts with a 5.68 ERA (12 er, 19.0 ip).
This series begins on Tuesday with an afternoon matinee, as the Aces will celebrate their first Education Day with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m. PT.
