The wait is over. After winning the Texas League South first half title, the Frisco RoughRiders have known they were playoff bound since June. Now, the moment they’ve been waiting for has finally arrived, as they seek Frisco’s first championship since 2022. The Texas League playoffs begin Tuesday, September 15th and the RoughRiders will meet the Amarillo Sod Poodles in a best-of-three South Division series with a spot in the Texas League Championship Series at stake.

Series Schedule

Game One: Tuesday, September 15th at HODGETOWN (6:35 p.m.)

Game Two: Thursday, September 17th at Riders Field (7:05 p.m.)

Game Three (If Necessary): Friday, September 18th (7:05 p.m.)

Tickets for games two and three at Riders Field are still available and fans can purchase an additional playoff pass for a $5 add-on fee to guarantee access to all home RoughRiders playoff games.

Three RoughRiders to Watch

  • INF Sebastian Walcott (TEX №1, MLB №9) made his return to the field and the shortstop position for the first time since offseason elbow surgery in Frisco’s regular season finale. With the bat, Walcott mashed nine home runs and 13 doubles in just 37 games for the Riders after returning from the injured list in mid-July.
  • INF Rafe Perich finished the regular season as the Rangers Minor League leader in batting average (.315), home runs (27) and doubles (31), posting the first 25+ HR, 30+ 2B season in the organization since 2014.
  • RHP Aidan Curry is Frisco’s projected game one starter and brings a 5.82 ERA across 14 Double-A starts into Amarillo. The righty began the season with High-A Hub City but, since his promotion to Frisco on May 26, ranks 10th in the Texas League with 83 strikeouts.

Three Sod Poodles to Watch

  • SS Cristofer Torin (ARI №17) finished the regular season with the fourth-most hits (139) in the Texas League and was the league’s only shortstop to rack up 20 doubles and 15 home runs. The 21-year-old did it all while being the league’s single hardest hitter to strike out.
  • OF Avery Owusu-Asiedu joined Amarillo in the second week of August, hit five home runs in his four games and proceeded to hit 14 total homers in just 30 games as a Sod Poodle — the most in the Texas League in that span. Frisco, however, held him to 5-for-25 with 11 strikeouts at the plate in an early September series at Riders Field.
  • RHP Junior Sanchez (ARI №28) is Amarillo’s scheduled starter for game one at just 20 years old. Across 16 starts as a Sod Poodle, the right-hander has a 5.23 ERA in his debut Double-A season. He lasted just 2.1 innings in both of his regular starts against the RoughRiders, surrendering 11 combined hits and eight combined earned runs for a head-to-head ERA of 15.43.

Three Things to Know

  1. High-Gear Year: For the first time since the 2014 season, the RoughRiders led the league in batting average, hitting a combined .272 as a team. Coincidentally, Amarillo finished second with a .267 team average. With production up and down the order, the RoughRiders set single-season franchise records in runs, home runs, extra-base hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS.
  2. Too Close to Call: Frisco and Amarillo played three six-game series against each other in the regular season and all three finished in a series split, meaning the season series was split right down the middle as well, with nine wins apiece. Of the 18 regular season matchups, 11 were decided by one or two runs and four went to extra innings. The two offenses combined to score an average of over 15 runs a game in their regular season meetings.
  3. Title Chase: For the RoughRiders to wear the Championship crown in the Texas League for the first time since 2022, it will take just four total wins. If Frisco wins two of the three games against Amarillo, the RoughRiders will meet the winner of the Texas League North Division Series between the Tulsa Drillers and Springfield Cardinals. The Texas League Championship Series would also be a best-of-three. In 2022, Frisco went unbeaten in the playoffs, sweeping San Antonio and then Wichita to claim the title. Frisco and Amarillo have never met in the postseason since the Sod Poodles joined the Texas League in 2019.
